My little girl, Bailey, almost 9, is going downhill very quickly. She was diagnosed with SM in 2011. But I saw the signs when she was about 5. All the vets said she had alleriges or ear problems. I finally found a vet who knew about SM. Since then, she has been on prednisone, tramadol and gabapentin. We have not tried prilosec yet. We have not opted for surgery because she went through so much as a puppy, almost died from pneumonia. Also, this last October, we had to remove her eye due to glaucoma and uveitis. We had been giving her all kinds of eye meds for a year and finally, they did not work anymore. She seemed to be okay after the surgery, but within the last couple of weeks, has lost her balance. I don't want my little girl to suffer. I am glad I found this blog and it has given me some comfort and heartache too, because I know the time is coming when I will have to send her to the rainbow bridge. |

Hello--I just found out today that the Cavalier puppy of friends of ours has been diagnosed with SM so I went on the Internet for information on this dreadful disease. That's how I came across your blog and since you said you weren't getting responses and wondered whether anyone was reading, I wanted to tell you that I was very touched by reading all that you had gone through to help your little girl. And though I have not personally been affected by this disease, last year our Westie was diagnosed with cancer and we fought an eight-month battle from May until December, when we lost her. So I truly relate to the heartbreak you've had, and there's comfort in knowing others care for their pets as deeply as we do. Sincere sympathy to you and yours.

I lost my maltipoo, Luci, on June 26, 2012 to Chiari malformation and syringomelia. My heart is so broken. I mourn her loss daily. Reading about Abbey has helped me to know that others have gone through this also. At the time it was so overwhelming. And is still devastating. I had never even heard of this condition in dogs until it affected my Luci. |
