I was on board the Parks from May of 72 until decommissioned in 73. I worked primarily in the after engine room and was onboard for operation line-backer. I have a VA advocate who would like to assist anyone having medical symptoms that may be related to being within the 12 mile limit and operating up north. additionally, he says he can help any of the widows with potential claims for their spouses illness and subsequent death. contact Steve Johnson at 530-622-2143 (VA Licensed Claim Agent #39810) He is amazing! I hope he can help any of you that have service related issues. FCL

Fresh out of A school at Great Lakes, I reported aboard in 1972. The Parks was tempoary duty for me until my nuke power training started at Mare Island, CA. I did try to extend my tour on the Parks because I wanted to get some sea time before school. The Navy said nope!

I do have fond memories of my stay. Sitting on a bucket at the electrical switchboard. Getting seasick, (not intentionally, someone puked on the main deck and as I got up for the mid watch and went to the head from below deck berthing, my nose came level with the puke! Well, that did it for me!) , a burial at sea, running blackened ship at night and seeing all the stars, sitting underneath the motor whaleboat and reading, scaring an officer when I pulled a fuse and sparks flew.

I still have some of the tools that I was issued while serving aboard.

Fun times, for the most part.

I was on board for one Westpac cruise to Vietnam. We were on the gunline twice during the trip for a total of 60 days. Had numerous fire assignments and expended a lot of 5 inch rounds. Made port calls in Honolulu, Guam, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Philippines, and Singapore. Became a Shellback. The Parks was a great ship!

For EMFN Malito:

There is a detailed account of the 72 WESTPAC tour in the final history portion of the ship's history on the website. We were in and out of DaNang a couple of times. We did missions from near the Cambodian border to the coast of North Vietnam, including LineBacker II. My email is under the Association Officers ICON on the website

caught the ship in subic near the end of westpac cruise in 68. Enlistment ended January 69. I can't recall too many names. Henson Em2 Ellis Dc2 Ellis and I installed a patch inside the stack to keep us from missing sea maneuvers. We had come in on Friday afternoon leaking stack gas into the midships passageway. We got underway on Monday. Good job Ellis.
