Firstly I am impressed with your website - full of fantastic details and pictures. I have a photo of a Swedish regiment that I found after my late Swedish mother who died nearly 2 years ago. I am trying to identify a person in the photo if he was a member of the Haglund or Lindqvist family. The photo was taken in 1904. How can I send you the black and white photo please? I was told that the uniform was I/1855 but that did very little to help me search further.

Kan inte annat än skicka detta spontana ebrev efter att ha hamnat här efter att jag googlade "varför emigrerade så få västmanlänningar" och där dök du upp högt upp.

1-Du har gjort en fantastiskt lärorik, strukturerad och övergripande allmänhistorisk presentation av släktforskning i allmänhet och emigrationen i synnerhet.
2-Som relativt nybliven skäktforskare är jag med i Västerås och Ådalens släktforskarföreing
3-Forskar för min hustru om farmor Blenda Elofsson som levde i Nyland där hon födde 16 barn och begravde 11 av dem inkl sin man runt 1880-1961!
3-Hustruns morfar emigrerade till NyaZ ca 1920 och kom hem med tre moderlösa döttrar 1sep1939!
4-Jag själv ABB-ingenjör och intresserad av industrialismnens framväxt och samhällsförändringarna. Att det kokar ned till en mycket intressant ny hobby som får ytterligare sin näring när man ramlar över en sån här hemsida

Thank you, Hans, for all your hard work on this website. You've compiled excellent and useful resources for the amateur genealogist; I've found your work most helpful.

Incidentally, I too have Swedish roots, some of which are in Västernorrland/Medelpad, specifically the Sundsvall area. My earliest ancestor (3rd great grandfather) was an orphan boy who was born in Stockholm in 1820 and placed with a family in Boden, Liden. His father was a soldier with the Svea Livgarde. The boy's name was Carl Niklas Theodor Alfvar. His grandson, Henning Theodor Alvar, eventually emigrated to the United States and married a woman from Kristinestad, Österbotten, Finland and became my great grandparents.

My other Swedish family came from the Småland region of Sweden, mostly the Algutsboda parish.
